If the garage door is fitted with an opener disconnect its draw bar arm from the garage door. That require one to remove the clevis pin by taking off the cotton pin.
-unplug the opener power to prevent the opener from running in case someone try opening the door while you are working.
-Just about 3″ above one of the rollers, vise grip the vertical. Remove the current spring assembly and put in place the end bearing plates on the inside angle and vertical flag bracket.
-make the outer narrower race of the bearing face the outside of the door. Insert 2 carriage bolts and finger tighten them. Tighten the nuts to hold the plate bottom to the horizontal angle. Insert the left-end of the 1″ outside diameter shaft into the end-bearing plate.
- Install the new end bearing plate on the inside of the flag bracket and horizontal track angle.
-Next, install also not less than two bolts on the bottom of the end bearing plate and then tighten the nuts using your hands. Secure the top end of the bearing plate to the jamb using a lag screw.
-Now you can tighten the nuts that hold the end bearing plate to the horizontal angle and vertical flag bracket.
- Measure the length from the garage door top to the center shaft and record that measurement. Also, measure the length between the door top and to the header and mark the end of the length. Holding the spring anchor against the header, the mark should line up with the notch in the bracket. Drill the stationary hole at the bottom of the bracket and at the adjusted slots in the spring anchor bracket to the door head.
-Secure the garage door header where you drilled with lag screw to the spring anchor bracket. Vise grip the spring anchor on the left side of the garage door, make the bearing face same direction as the end bearing plate on the left side of the garage door. This reduces the risk of the shaft falling and causing an accident or cause damage to the garage door.
-Now, loosen the setscrew on the cable drum and slide the cable drum on the shaft. Put back the shaft on the end bearing plate.
-Repeat the procedure on the right-hand side of the garage door.
-Next, wind the springs marking it with chalk or paint. The winding plug should be tight enough so that when you pull down on the bar the door must begin to lift… Then carefully pull down the winding bar till the door is 3″ from the ground while the roller should hit the vise grip on the track. Remove the bar from the cone if the door stays on the ground. Raising the door off the ground slowly, check its balance. Oil the spring thickly. The thicker the oil the longer the spring last. Put back the garage door opener and plug in the power for the opener.
