Outdoor key codes are a great solution for easy and safe access to a garage through the automatic door. Most systems come ready to be set up with a four-digit code, which, when entered, will make the door raise or lower.

An outdoor keypad is, simply, a remote just like the one in the car but instead of a button, it uses a code. This, of course, makes certain that only people with the code can access the garage. It lets your family in and keeps burglars out.

How Do Garage Door Outdoor Keypads Work?

Start by matching the garage door with the remote device. A list of correspondence codes should be included with the remote device. Search for the code that matches your garage door model and brand. A specific garage door should be matched on the list to be exact. One should hold down a button on the wall controller while one is holding the remote device close by its location. Then select a channel from the selected door. By doing this it will directly connect to the selected doors control mechanism. Once connected, the system will demand a pin code. One should type the code in twice.

You can program your garage door, too. It doesn’t matter if the opener is a chain drive, a screw drive, or a belt drive, they all program the same way. All you will need are a step ladder, a helper, your remote, and a little self-confidence. Then follow these five simple steps to reprogram a garage door opener.

1) You need to clear the existing codes. You, or your helper, must climb the ladder you have placed under the garage door so that you can reach the main motor console. Locate the “learn” button which holds the information from the remote control. Usually, this button is square (but could be round) and usually it is located on the rear of the console (but could be on the side). You will identify the “learn” button easily because that is where all the wires run into the motor.

2) Hold down the “learn” button for about ten seconds until the LED (light emitting diode) goes out. This will erase the old code from all existing remotes for the garage door.

3) Choose numbers for a new code. This new code should be one that’s difficult for people to decipher including ex-husbands and wives. Do not set up anniversaries and birthdays or important dates common to you but rather have a unique combination of digits you can easily remember.

4) You, or your helper, must again press the “learn” button on the main motor console until you hear a click and the light begins to flash. You now have just thirty seconds to key in the new numbers from your remote.

5) Repeat this procedure with every remote, and with the keyless entry pad. The opener can be used with five remotes or with four remotes and a keypad.

There you have it. You have just programmed your garage door . But keep that remote control with you at all times. If you, or a member of your family loses a remote control, you will need to do the five steps again if you want to keep unwanted visitors out of your home.
